Harrison High School originally opened in 1954, and is in its second building and 6th decade of educating the youth of Colorado Springs. Instrumental Music Department:
The Instrumental Music Department's core philosophy at Harrison High School is that student musicians learn from performance opportunities located at venues in, and outside the school setting. Currently, approximately 50 students in grades 9-12 participate in performances at parades and events throughout the school year, representing Harrison School District Two in Colorado Springs, the Pikes Peak Region, and across the State of Colorado.
The annual live audience for the Department is estimated at 105,000, and the television audience is around 500,000. Additionally, the Harrison High School Panther Marching Band represents the Harrison community of schools in four competitions including the annual Colorado Bandmaster's Association Marching Band State Championships.
The H.H.S. Wind Symphony participates in at least 3 large group festivals frequently taking home Superior (I) ratings, and performs at least 3 public concerts during each school year. The new Concert Band will also participate in a large group festival as well as perform for the public at department performances. Students from Harrison also annually earn 10 or more individual/group Superior ratings at the C.H.S.A.A. Solo and Ensemble festival.
The H.H.S. Jazz Ensemble participates in at least 3 Jazz Festivals each school year as well. At the end of the year, the ensemble travels to Greeley, CO each spring to participate in the annual U.N.C. Greeley Jazz Festival. The jazz festival is sponsored by the International Association for Jazz Education and it’s the largest festival of its kind in the world with well over 200 high school and collegiate attendees each year coming from as far way as Thailand. The Jazz Ensemble also serves as an ambassador for the Instrumental Music Department and it is frequently asked to perform at community and district functions throughout the school year.
